"The city as a chaotic hive of bustle and smog'

During the 19th century, London was transformed into the world's largest city and capital of the British Empire. Its population expanded from 1 million in 1800 to 6.7 million a century later. During this period, London became a global political, financial, and trading capital, due to the invention of machinery and technology which gave rise to a factory system in the late 1700's, known as the Industrial Revolution.
"A London fog is brown, reddish-yellow, or greenish, darkens more than a white fog, has a smoky, or sulphurous smell, is often somewhat dryer than a country fog, and produces, when thick, a choking sensation." R Russell, London Fogs (London: 1880)
Russels use of the senses to describe the smog in London at the time gives great imagery. The alliteration on the "S" sound emphasises the smell, as if im stood on the cobble streets breathing in the intoxicating smell, weakening my lungs.

My expectations...

My first thoughts on the brief-

-With only little experience doing character makeup, i know the difficulty and thought process that has to go into this project. Expanding my skills on creative thinking excites me, also digging deep into a characters role and emotions.

-Creating an image transferring Miss Havisham and Estellas emotions and feelings through styling and makeup animates me to research fully so i can transmit the character traits and personalities to the viewers.

-The idea of conveying my imagination and ideas through a blog, which at this very moment, I'm enjoying it much more than having to fill a sketch book. Blogging is much easier, as it can be done anywhere and at any time. Also i can write as much as i want, and not have to worry about running off the page.

-Being told that we will be practicing bruising and scarring in the studio thrills me, as i also really do enjoy the dark side of makeup.

-Improving my confidence skills in both practical techniques, and also having to find models of a different age range, in other places than the university.(It scares me to ask a woman on the street if i could make her down, as if she is on her death bed, and see their reaction.) This should be a challenge!

-This unit will help me better my time management skills, as we have a lot of work in a short space of time, however this prepares me for the industry!
